What you should know
Optimizing
your terminal's financial performance and building a reputation
as a good manager depends on your ability to effectively
and strategically manage the safety, performance/productivity,
and workplace culture of your organization in an environment
of global competition, regulatory requirements, driver shortages,
and growing costs associated with workplace injuries. Failure
to control even one of these areas will result in significant
cost impacts to your company, and in some cases
...being the major story at the top of the
news hour.
According
to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics and the
U.S. Department of Labor, delivery truck drivers are
considered a high incident occupation for back injuries
and have the highest injury rates of all occupations. These
statistics have resulted in trucking companies having to
pay out billions of dollars in workers compensation and
lost productivity costs. Researchers at Ohio University's
College of Health and Human Services have concluded
that workers absence due to back pain disability cost industry
an estimated $20 billion to $40 billion per year in the
U.S.
Additionally,
the number of older persons (55+) in the labor force is
projected to go from 18.2 to 25.2 million by 2008 according
to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. Your young
workers today will eventually age. Body mechanics change
as we age and we all will require some type of assistance
to keep us safe and productive. With the labor shortages
and diluted experience pool of truck drivers, keeping your
most seasoned workers productive is a necessary strategic
priority.
Quite simply,
you cannot reduce costs and increase profits if you do not
value and take care of your workers. In today's world of
skilled labor shortages, aging population, multitudes of
regulatory and legal compliance obligations and stiff competition,
it is no longer enough to just know the business. Transportation
managers today must be able to effectively manage people,
processes and costs.
In spite of these grim statistics, little
has been done to address the ergonomic and safety needs
of workers in this industry
